Neo Geo AES

Here we have all the games in the Neo Geo AES Section.
Neo Geo AES
One on One Beat Em Up
Massive Neo Geo series from the 2D fighting grandmaster SNK. Some wonderful playable characters to choose from including the superbly named Korean Taekwondo expert KimKap Hwan and wide girthed Chinese gent Cheng Sinzan.
Neo Geo AES
One on One Beat Em Up
Extremely playable and well balanced sprite based martial fest from the SNK stable. The limitations of sprites next to polygons led to some great artwork for both characters and backgrounds.
Neo Geo AES
One on One Beat Em Up
Truly jaw dropping in its hey day with the train and waterfall backdrops particularly memorable, this grandmaster can still pull off a few tricks like old Jubei Yamada. Full of that distinct SNK style much imitated, but never surpassed.

One on One Beat Em Up
Seamlessly animated with all the panache that goes into SNK’s characters and backgrounds especially when it comes to the rich heritage of the Fatal Fury series. The new faces settle in well and are far from stereotypical. Collecting power ups is strangely invigorating too.

Platform
A challenging platformer released early in the Neo Geos life that takes on a sort of medieval fantasy look matching its magician hero. Yet our hero can transform into other guises including a ninja justifying the Eastern infused backgrounds of golden Buddhas. The swirling backgrounds are very impressive and there is certainly plenty of challenging meat on the bones of a well structured platform romp.

Shooter
SNK truly mastered the ability to produce fun games in 2D such as Metal Slug which reminded the gaming cognoscenti there was life and gameplay without polygons. Pure refined game mechanics and delightful in game humour to bring a smile to the face of the most grizzled gaming veteran. This is a dream conversion to the home system and a realistic option considering the original cart versions astronomical prices.

Sports
Zip speed race title from ADK that graced the SNK system with its isometric action. Full of nice touches such as the tyre skid marks on the road and the headlights effect when in tunnels. Nice, solid feel to the sprites due to the isometric perspective and its arcade roots ensure drivers get good warning arrows as for where the next break neck bend leads. Relentless soundtrack does little to encourage breaking through the varied terrains.

Shoot Em Up
Hardcore shoot ’em up for the Neo Geo CD with a tough but fair relationship between the player’s vessel and the enemy hoards. Relies on memorising the attack waves to aid progress and a lot of joypad dexterity rather than just pummelling fire. Irem’s influence is there to see with the detachable probe, but the overall design is very much a unique SNK master plan with some sumptuous backgrounds and slinky animation. Power charge weapons certainly help escape a claustrophobic corner of the screen.
Neo Geo AES
One on One Beat Em Up
Plays with the second fighting plane, so attacks can be averted by leaping up the screen. Also includes ring outs so you can smash your opponent into a glass lift or even onto a departing train.
Neo Geo AES
One on One Beat Em Up
Genki can still recall the incredible atmosphere generated by this monster one on one scrapper from SNK. Taking a distinctly Nihon-centric approach to the fight genre, right from the off we are clear this game positively oozes Eastern atmosphere as the lone samurai sits under the cascading sakura blossom. Creating a feel of life and death being on whim of a falling petal, we are soon treated to sea spray from island backdrops to the fires of hell themselves. Absolute treat of a game with atmospheric backgrounds from kabuki theatre, snowy Ainu inspired Hokkaido to Mount Fuji. The giant ‘Earthquake’ character is still jaw dropping even today.

One on One Beat Em Up
A host of crazy characters, almost as many as there are in game modes and health bars to keep track of your layers well being, temperament, weapon etc. Samurai Spirits Zero is not shy on a drop or two of claret either – all in the proper red colour unlike the Western versions of some SNK titles. But unfortunately SS Rei never made it out of Japan. Extra pugilists have been entered over the arcade versions and there’s a practise mode too to help hone that samurai like timing. A superbly solid scrap and slicer.

Shooter
The sort of game you would keep a cutting off from the magazine, so good it looked back in the day. And its sprite world still stands up today with lots lavish detail, not that you get much opportunity to admire it, with grenade pin in mouth, gun blazing. The motorbike shooting sections are great fun and the isometric Ikari action is well paced and can’t be faulted. The pinnacle of arcade cross over coin-ops.

One on One Beat Em Up
A real slug fest worthy of what’s become a hardcore gaming machine. Some real characters to choose from in trio’s including the Ikari team, Psycho Soldier team as well as combatants from other SNK titles to settle those arguments once and for all. A gritty, urban edge to the graphics, perhaps the pinnacle of the series?
Neo Geo AES
One on One Beat Em Up
Sequel and mean fighter. Plenty of specials and a guest appearance of Neo Geo Land, Japan as one of the stages. The dark and moody Korean stage with rain lashing down and burning tree gets Genki’s vote though.

One of the original titles for the Neo Geo. Very smartly presented with lots of speech from your ever helpful caddy. A good arcady golf title, one of only two on the Neo Geo.

Shoot Em Up
A very popular title and obviously true to the Neo Geo original for the purists in this version. Gameplay involves shooting the falling projectiles as they come down the screen in a manner so to cause as much debris as possible on your opponents screen. A real treat in two player mode with the unique gameplay really excelling itself all wrapped up in the delightful sunshine presentation. A fine addition to any collection.
Neo Geo AES
One on One Beat Em Up
The Jet of the title refers to the extra speed in movement added to the mix to make a very tasty fight fest with a few extra specials thrown in for each character just to keep you on your toes and fleet footed. The graphics are the pinnacle of the series on the AES and the results are up there with the finer fight titles on the system – no mean feat amongst such refined company.
